Digging for Roman Cawood
The dig has now finished and we are waiting for the identification of the pottery by a local expert
The coronavirus has stopped us from more field walking and from having the bones identified
Its looking at the moment like the timescale is 3rd to 4th century AD with some earlier 1st to 2nd century Samian ware
I am researching also the local area for evidence of Romans and have found almost 60 artefacts that are thought to be Roman so far
New dates for dig from 8th October to 19th October
Open day for all to visit 13th October 2019
———————————————————————————
Due to the recent heavy rain in the area we have been advised to change the dates of the dig
I am sorry to have to change the days but we don’t have much choice. The crop has been harvested bit the straw is laying wet on the stubble and this needs to dry then be baled and then removed
This will now be on the 7th to the 19th October
Its possible before that date that we might do some field walking looking for finds if the land dries out
Tony Hunt and Jon Kenny using the drone to photograph the fields in Cawood
This is a picture of the site we shall be excavating. If you look closely you can see round shapes and a possible track across the site
There will be a dig close to Cawood on the 5th to the 16th August 2019
If you are interested in volunteering please let us know
We have a Facebook page Community Heritage- Digging Roman Cawood which will

Battles of 1066
On Saturday 12th November we are holding an open afternoon…. free ….to see the results of the Keesbury Heritage Project
See forthcoming events for more details
The Vikings came up the river Ouse as far as Cawood reputedly with over 300 long boats. They disembarked and went towards York where at Germany Beck in Fulford they fought the battle.
At this time its possible that Anglo/Scandinavians were living here already

Battle of Fulford
Click on the link below for an introduction to the excavation of the site
Here is a Hidden Context TV film of the beginning of a cairn to commemorate the Battle of Fulford in 1066.
Investigating this site has been controversial since it also found itself at the centre of a planning dispute. Like any battle of that time, Stamford Bridge and Hastings for example, there will always be debate about its exact location.
So there are always going to be possibles and probables, the final report on the archaeology will be interesting.
At the site the landscape matches the saga accounts and we wait for expert analysis of the metal work from the fording point on the beck.
